This Paso Robles straw bale home was designed by the San Luis Sustainability Group with an eye toward energy efficient building techniques. A year-round, comfortable living space was accomplished with super-insulated strawbale walls, high interior thermal mass, efficient dual-glaze windows throughout, and advantageous site orientation to maximize winter sun heat gain. Conversely, properly sized overhangs and the use of insulating louvers on skylights were utilized to avoid overheating in the summer months. The high thermal mass, superior insulation, and strategically placed ceiling fans eliminate the need for costly air conditioning on all but the hottest days. Providing outdoor spaces was also a major design criterion, and the home includes a screen porch as well as both summer and winter patio areas. Indoors, the design includes 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths with multi-use guest room/study, mudroom, and a large open kitchen/dining/living space. |
